Synopsis

The Heiress by Ruth and Augustus Goetz is a strong American drama, first staged in 1947 and set in New York in 1850. It was adapted from the 1880 Henry James novel Washington Square. Catherine is the unsophisticated only child of Dr Austin Sloper, a prosperous medical practitioner. Catherine is courted by the young Morris Townsend, whom Dr Sloper suspects of being primarily interested in Catherine’s money.
